I'm Eleanor. The table calls me Nell, and Tuesday Mahj is me at a kitchen table — there is nobody else here.

I spent thirty-one years as a librarian, most of them cataloguing: taking material that arrived in no order and making it findable. I started playing American Mah Jongg when the calendar got quiet, and for about a year I was the slowest woman at the Tuesday table. I stopped enjoying an afternoon I had chosen on purpose, which is a foolish thing to let happen and easier to let happen than you would think.

So I did what I would have done at work. Index cards on the kitchen table, one card per structure instead of one per row, until two in the morning — and by then the card had stopped being a list and become a map. The woman who has run our game for twenty years asked what I had been looking at. Then the rest of the table did. That map is what I sell here, as The Sorted Card.

What I sell

Digital study material for reading the National Mah Jongg League's annual card — PDF pages and video lessons. Everything arrives by email and download link the moment you pay. Nothing ships, and there is nothing to send back.

What I am not

I am not certified by anybody, because nobody certifies this: there is no board and no exam for teaching American Mah Jongg, so anyone showing you a certified badge made it themselves. I am not connected to the National Mah Jongg League in any way. And I am not a person who will quote you a percentage — I do not know what this will do at your table, only what it did at mine.
